Huge selection of quality record player cartridges in many variants from know brands as Ortofon, Rega, Audio-Technica and ClearAudio.

A pickup is often the most important part of a gramophone setup. There are several principles for the construction of a pickup needle, the most well-known are MM and MC pickups.

Overall, the differences between MM and MC pickup needles are as follows:

• MM stands for Moving Magnet. In this pickup structure, a small magnet is attached to the needle flange, which is located in the housing itself between two coils. When the needle follows the groove of the LP, the magnet vibrates between the coils, generating a voltage that ultimately translates into sound through the pickup.

• MC stands for Moving Coil. The opposite structure compared to the MM pickup. Here the coils on the needle tab sit and the magnet are in the pickup housing. In this construction, there is room for far fewer windings on the coil, which is why the sound level is lower than at MM. The microscopic precision results in the audio side, but also results in ahigher price range.

MM or MC?

If you look up the Output in the specifications for a pickup (listed in mV), a Moving magnet will typically be 3-6mV, where a Moving Coil will be 10-20 times weaker (0.3-0.8mV is not abnormal).

The differences mentioned above mean that you must choose the right pre-amplifier (RIAA) for its pickup. If you are unsure of which pickup is suitable for a record player and your need, you are of course welcome to contact us.
